In 2008 at the British Motor Show, Renault showcased a new track focused variant of their hugely popular Renaultsport Megane Mk2…. the R26.R.

Based on the original R26, Renault made substantial changes to the car including huge weight reduction along with chassis developments to bring the already very potent R26 to a new level of performance. Not only were the rear seats removed and replaced with a roll cage but the comprehensive weight saving went further to include the removal of sound deadening, rear glass windows replaced with polycarbonate ones, carbon fibre race seats and bonnet installed and the deletion of front fog lamps and head lamp washers. The net result of all of this was a substantial 123kg reduction in weight over the standard R26.

Mechanically, the R26.R benefitted from new springs and damper settings, a wider track, grooved brake discs and optional titanium exhaust. Semi slick Toyo Proxes R888’s could also be specified.

The end result was the hot hatch equivalent of the iconic 997 GT3 RS. The cars on track ability quickly showcased that all the changes were much more than a marketing gimmick with the R26.R achieving a lap time around the Nurburgring of 8:16.9.

Having covered just 15,200 miles from new, the car comes with a comprehensive service history split between main dealer and specialist. The R26.R remains to this day one of the most driver focused hot hatches ever to be conceived. Its emphasis on weight reduction and agility over outright power is refreshingly analogue in the modern day and low mileage examples in such good condition are few and far between.
