In 2008 at the British Motor Show, Renault showcased a new limited production version of the Renaultsport Megane which ended up causing the most stir we have seen for a Renault since the launch of the Clio V6 some 7 years prior…..the Renaultsport Megane R26.R.
Based on the Renaultsport Megane R26, Renault put the car on an extreme track focused diet combining huge weight reduction with chassis developments to bring the already very potent R26 to a new level of performance. Not only were the rear seats removed and replaced with a roll cage but the comprehensive weight saving went further to include sound deadening removal, rear windows replaced with plastic ones, carbon fibre seats and bonnet installed and the removal of front fog lamps and head lamp washers. The result of all of this was a 123kg reduction in weight over the standard R26.
Mechanically, the R26.R benefitted from new springs and damper settings, a wider track, grooved brake discs and optional titanium exhaust and semi slick Toyo Proxes R888’s.
The finished product was sensational and the hot hatch equivalent of the 997 GT3 RS. Furthermore it was more than just an impressive marketing gimmick with the R26.R achieving a lap time around the Nurburgring of 8:16.9. If you wanted a track focused hot hatch, this was the one to have.

We are thrilled to offer for sale this exceptional and original Renaultsport Megane R26.R. First registered in March 2009, this sensational Deep Black example was one of only 230 cars to reach the UK and has covered just over 10,000 miles from new. It comes with a full service history including a major service and cambelt change that has just been completed. Not only is the car in immaculate condition, it also benefits from full impact area PPF and the very rare and desirable Titanium exhaust.
Having witnessed the recent rally in Renaultsport Clio V6 valuations it is fair to say that the R26.R has very much lagged the trend…especially for a car which is rarer and arguably a more engaging driver’s car. The scintillating noise as the car fires into life is spell binding and enhanced by the Titanium exhaust and lack of rear sound deadening.
But it is on the track where the R26.R really sets itself apart. The grip from the Toyo Proxes R888 tyres is monumental and leaves the driver capable of challenging much more expensive exotica through the corners. The chassis is beautifully balanced and gives the driver confidence to push on. It really is a mini GT3.
We are extremely bullish on the long term valuations of these cars and as Clio V6’s move higher these will be next to move up in price.
Please note the car is currently fitted with a Sony audio player however a brand new and original OEM blanking plate will be supplied with the car.
