In 2016 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a track focused variant of Mercedes-AMG’s already very potent new sports car (the AMG GT) was released….the AMG GT R. Building on the huge success of the model line, Mercedes-AMG were keen to develop a more track orientated car which really took the fight to Porsche and their GT3 product offering.

Utilising the sensational M178 twin turbo V8 AMG engine tuned to 577bhp, a large focus of development for the GT R actually went into its chassis where adaptive coil-over dampers were installed along with active underbody fairing, a 9-mode AMG Traction Control System and active rear wheel steer system (a first for an AMG model).

In conjunction with an array of lightweight carbon fibre components and revised aero, the net result was a car that looked as good as it went and momentarily devoured the Green Hell lap record for a rear wheel drive sports car of 7:10.9.

A Roadster version followed shortly after with just 750 units being built globally of which approximately 30 made it to the UK.
