Ferrari 308 GTB (1978/S)
SOLD
In 1975 at the Paris motor show, Maranello showcased their latest two seater sports car to wear the iconic Cavallino Rampante….the Ferrari 308. Following in the footsteps of its formidable predecessor the Dino 246GT, Ferrari called upon Leonardo Fioravanti of Pininfarina to assist with styling of the bodywork.
Powered by Ferrari’s 2.9 Litre V8 (F106 AB V8) engine, the early carburated cars produced 252bhp from the factory and were mated to a 5-speed dog leg manual gearbox.
The end result was a beautiful evolution of the Dino and instigated the styling for many a Ferrari to follow. Under the watchful eye of Carrozzria Scaglietti, from 1975-77, 308 bodies were built from fibreglass or “vetroresina”. However from 1978 onwards, Ferrari reverted to the use of steel for the construction of the body. These early steel cars also maintained the dry sump, carburated engines used in the Vetroresina cars. It was not until 1979 that they shifted to wet sump and then in1980 Ferrari made the move to Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection.
To this day, the 308 remains an iconic if not slightly forgotten piece of Ferrari’s sumptuous history and a real treat to behold in the flesh.
