Audi R8 V8 Coupe (2010/60)

SOLD

In 2003, Audi showcased the Le Mans Quattro concept at the Frankfurt Motorshow. Pitched as a celebration of 3 back to back wins at Le Mans for the R8 race car through 2000-2002, the concept provided the perfect platform for Audi to showcase the synergies developed from the recent acquisition of Lamborghini by the VW group as well as testing client appetite for an Audi supercar.

Unsurprisingly, feedback was positive and in 2006, the Audi R8 was launched. Initially powered by the same 4.2 litre V8 as the infamous B7 RS4, the range was later expanded to include a 5.2 litre V10 variant borrowed out of its new stablemate, the Lamborghini Gallardo.

The car was a resounding success. Finally, an everyday supercar to take the fight to Porsche. Unfortunately however, the timing of the cars birth was less pertinent with the world stumbling into a global recession just as first V8 customer deliveries were being made.

INVESTMENT THESIS

1st registered in September 2010, this extremely well specified manual car finished in Lava Grey is a perfect example of the Ingolstadt manufacturer’s first sports car. Featuring a host of desirable options including Magnetic Ride, Bang & Olufsen sound system, Recaro bucket sports seats and front and rear parking sensors, it is the perfect drivers specification in our opinion. The car come with full service history split between Audi main dealer and specialist with the last service just carried out in June 2020.

Although sporting 2 cylinders less than its big brother the R8 V10, the loss in engine capacity also brings with it less weight and ultimately a more nimble driving experience for the R8 V8. The 4.2 litre 8 cylinder engine is a corker of a motor with plenty of low end torque but when given the chance, loves to be stretched across the full rev range. It’s a different aural experience to the V10 but by no means less impressive.

The steering and clutch at slow speeds are refreshingly weighted and purposeful but still remarkably usable for city/town driving. But getting the car out of town and onto the country roads is where you truly realise how capable this car is. It charges up the road beautifully and gear changes are seamless through the wonderfully analogue gated box.

Into a corner and onto the brakes with incredible stopping power. It’s through the bends were the brilliance of this cars chassis and engineering really come alive. The grip is phenomenal but with the rear wheel drive bias of the Quattro system, the car feels less inclined to under-steer like many a fast Audi in the past. In fact, coupled with the brilliant chassis, it allows you to jump on the throttle much earlier out of a corner as it slingshots you down the road.

From an investment perspective; V8 prices have definitely found a floor in the current market context. That said, it is becoming increasingly hard to find a car in the condition and with the specification of our beautiful Daytona Grey example. We expect to see prices of clean, low mileage examples begin to creep up over the next couple of years as the market gets wiser to the fact that this is one of the last true naturally aspirated, larger capacity manual gearbox supercars ever to be made.
