Audi R8 V10 Spyder (2010/60)
SOLD
In 2003, Audi showcased the Le Mans Quattro concept at the Frankfurt Motorshow. Pitched as a celebration of 3 back to back wins at Le Mans for the R8 race car through 2000-2002, the concept provided the perfect platform for Audi to showcase the synergies developed from the recent acquisition of Lamborghini by the VW group as well as testing client appetite for an Audi supercar.
Unsurprisingly, feedback was positive and in 2006, the Audi R8 launched. Initially powered by the same 4.2 litre V8 as the infamous B7 RS4, the range was later expanded to include a 5.2 litre V10 variant borrowed from its new stablemate, the Lamborghini Gallardo.
The car was a resounding success. Finally, an everyday supercar to take the fight to Porsche and the 911 Turbo. Timing of the cars birth was less pertinent however with the world stumbling into a global recession just as the first V8 customer deliveries were being made. That said, in 2009 if you had a spare £100k to throw at a supercar, you need look no further than the mighty R8 V10.

INVESTMENT THESIS
First registered in September 2010, we are pleased to present for sale this immaculate manual R8 V10 Spyder finished in Ibis white with black leather interior. This is a meticulously cared for example with full Audi service history and having covered just 19,500 miles from new. In addition to the comprehensive list of standard features fitted to the R8 V10, the car also features the extended leather pack, carbon door mirrors as well as front and rear parking sensors.
In a similar vein to the Lamborghini Gallardo, the Audi R8 V10 was one of the last analogue bastions for manual, large capacity and naturally aspirated supercars ever to be produced. The 5.2 litre 10 cylinder engine coupled to the versatile Audi Quattro system creates a monumentally impressive and usable everyday supercar package. What’s more, being an Audi as opposed to a Lamborghini makes maintenance and servicing costs a lot more palatable.
As soon as you fire up the big V10 you feel in the presence of something special. The steering and clutch at slow speeds are refreshingly weighted and purposeful but still remarkably usable for city/town driving. But get out of town and onto the country roads is where you truly realise how capable this car is. Once over 3,000rpm, the engine note comes alive as exhaust valves open and you get the full fat sound that only a V10 can produce. The car pulls beautifully and gear changes are seamless through the gated box. For a big motor, it wants to rev and indulging it to the 8700rpm red line only highlights what a mind blowing engine this is.
Into a corner and the brakes, even in non ceramic form, have incredible stopping power. It’s through the bends were the brilliance of this cars chassis and engineering really come alive. The grip is phenomenal but with the rear wheel drive bias of the Quattro system, the car never feels like it wants to understeer. In fact squeeze the loud pedal a little early on the exit of a turn and you get a beautifully predictable and controllable bout of oversteer.
One of the great features of the V10 cars over their V8 brethren, (in addition to the extra 2000cc capacity and 100bhp) is the high level of factory options included as standard on these cars. This meant that sort after items such as the magnetic ride suspension and the Bang and Olufsen sound system all came as standard on the V10.
From an investment perspective; V10 prices have definitely found a floor in the current market context. That said, cars like our clean, low mileage example are few and far between so it’s worth spending the time and premium to find a good one. With no signs of Audi reintroducing a manual option for the current R8 model in the near future, we expect to see prices rise in a similar vein to what we have witnessed with the manual Ferrari F430 prices in recent years. With that, we wouldn’t be surprised to see cars like our beautiful example offered north of £70k in the next couple of years.
